Legion 2-13 Rathmore 3-6
Played in Derreen on a cold crisp Sunday these two evenly matched sides served up a close tight affair that kept the good sized crowd warm and entertained right to the end.Even the most fervent Legion supporter wouldn't have held out much hope as after 20 mins.of the first half Rathmore led by 8 pts.The Legion defence was brittle and under constant threat from a lively Rathmore attack. The Legion, having opened with a goal from Tom Moriarty - making an impressive return to action after 4 months out with injury - were soon on the backfoot and Rathmore dominated proceedings registering 3-4 in the process, the only reply being a point each from Padraig Lucey and Cathal Sheehan. On the brink of being overrun a late rally saw Padraig Lucey hit the net after a fine catch and a welcome point from David O Sullivan. The sides went in on a scoreline Legion 2-3 Rathmore 3-4.Even at this stage the signs weren't great and it would take a huge improvement to save the day in the second half. The early signs were that little had changed as Rathmore hit the first two points to stretch their lead back out to six. However this was to prove to be their last score as the Legion team lifted themselves in emphatic style.Brian Griffin started things off with a pt.and David O Sullivan hit 2 frees.Padraig Lucey was hugely influential and his partner Connie O Leary got better and better as the game wore on.Allied to this the Legion backs - well supported by their half forwards- got to terms with the Rathmore attack.Cathal and Danny Sheehan,Chris Davies all impressed as did Tom Lucey. The Legion forwards were far more incisive and hard working none more so than Aiden Slattery and Killian Treacy.Further points from David O Sullivan(3),Aiden Slattery(2),and Cathal Sheehan gave them a four point winning margin. After a rollercoaster ride the minors had dug themselves out with a heartwarming display
